Iruvar movie marked the debut of actress Aishwarya Rai. The movie was included in British Film Institute's 1000 Greatest Films of all time.
The movie is about Anandan (Mohanlal) a struggling actor in 1950s. Both Anandan and Tamizhselvan (Prakash Raj),a small time writer, look for opportunities in films. With Tamizhselvan's witty dialogues, Anandan manages to get selected in an audition. As time passes, Tamizhselvan joins politics and later asks Anandan's help with the party's publicity. However, through the years, they both drift apart becoming rivals at a point.
Iruvar was supposedly based on the real-life relationship of actor MGR and writer-turned-politician M Karunanidhi. Starting their lives on humble means, both of them rose to greater heights only to drift apart from each other.
